The Journey to St. Catherine of Siena’s Feast Day on April 29th

What is a Novena?

A novena is nine days of prayer, asking God for a specific intention, often through a Saint’s intercession.

Why Saint Catherine of Siena?

St. Catherine of Siena is known for her love of Christ and his Church. Her love was personal and mystical, culminating in her receiving the Stigmata of Jesus. Her love was also practical, expressing itself in advocacy for moral and administrative Church reform. She appealed personally to Church leaders, including Pope Gregory XI, to enact the reforms needed to rekindle faith within the Church, and the love of Christ that produces obedience to him and his teachings. Her advocacy was not politically motivated but flowed from her communion with Christ. She lived in the 14th century, a time not unlike our own. She died at the early age of 33.

Most Reverend Mark Bartosic, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, Episcopal Vicar of Vicariate II, is calling on all Catholic faithful to seek the intercession of St. Catherine of Siena to help our Church heal from the clergy sex abuse crisis and participate in a novena leading up to her feast day on Thursday, April 29.

Each night, for 9 nights, April 20-28, 2021, the Most Reverend Bartosic will visit a different parish, offering prayers of healing and atonement before the Blessed Sacrament. This is the second novena by Catholic laity to prayerfully unite the faithful for the guidance of the Holy Spirit, in healing and atonement for the clergy sexual abuse crisis. Heavenly Father, Your glory is in Your saints. We praise Your glory in the life of the admirable St. Catherine of Siena, virgin and doctor of the Church. Her whole life was a noble sacrifice inspired by an ardent love of Jesus, Your unblemished Lamb. In troubled times she strenuously upheld the rights of His beloved spouse, The Church.

Father, honor her merits and hear her prayers for each of us. Help us to pass unscathed through the corruption of this world, and to remain unshakably faithful to the church in word, deed, and example. Help us always to see Jesus as an anchor in the storms of life, and a beacon of light to the harbor of Your Love.
